The College’s first classes began at Fernlea, a ‘gentleman’s residence’ in Ashfield. When The University of Melbourne opened its doors to female scholars in 1881, many were former students of PLC, notably Constance Ellis, who was the first woman to receive the degree of Doctor of Medicine from Melbourne University; Flos Greig, the first woman to be admitted to legal practice in Victoria; Ethel Godfrey, one of the first female dentists in Victoria; and Vida Goldstein, suffragette and the first woman to stand for election to the Australian Federal Parliament.
