The Junkyard Dog death story has a very sad final chapter. If this occurs a Charisma check is not required to purchase another dog, nor is the conversation as long as the Sole Survivor states that they would like to purchase another dog.
Gene is extremely loath to sell it but if the Sole Survivor can pass a Charisma check of six or higher he can be persuaded to, painfully, let it go for 250 caps.
It appears during a random encounter in Fallout 4. In the workshop interface the Sole Survivor can select/move the doghouse and they will follow around while carrying it. It was in Mid-South where promoter Bill Watts christened Ritter as the Junkyard Dog. Unique dialogue will come up if encountering the dog with Dogmeat as a companion.
